Let's ACT for a Sustainable Future

To address climate change, it is time, more than ever, to take actions. As a responsible company, Air Liquide has long endeavored to protect the environment. In 2018, the Group took a step further with an ambitious commitment to reduce the carbon intensity of its activities.

Singapore's 2050 target: Halve emissions from 2030 peak

Global warming is a critical concern from a social and economical point of view. We have reached a turning point in ensuring a successful energy transition. At a time when policymakers, companies and investors across the world are working on the economic recovery, an opportunity has emerged to really make a difference and to focus on the ideal growth models that we envision for the future.

Along with the global community, Singapore is committed to play a part in supporting global climate action. It has put forth a long-term emissions development strategy (LEDS) that aims to peak its emissions at no higher than 65 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) around 2030 and halve emissions from its peak to 33 MtCO2e by 2050, with a view of achieving net-zero emissions as soon as viable in the second half of the century.1

Air Liquide's abatement of CO2 emissions for a low-carbon society

On 23rd March 2021, the Air Liquide Group announced its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives to ACT for a Sustainable future. One of its objectives is to target CARBON NEUTRALITY by 2050 with key intermediary milestones in 2025 and 2035:
  • Start REDUCING its ABSOLUTE CO2 emissions around 2025
  • Reach a 33% DECREASE of its Scope 1 & 2 CO2 emissions by 2035 compared to 2020

Developing low-carbon solutions for our customers and for industries

Ahead of Singapore's long-term emissions development strategy, Air Liquide is committed to partner its customers towards a low carbon, sustainable industry. As part of this global approach, we leverage our technologies and experience to reduce the climate impact of our operations and offer low-carbon gas solutions that contribute to the reduction of our customers’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Reducing our CO2 emissions

We are also working internally to achieve these goals through sourcing of low-carbon and renewable electricity from outside Singapore; providing Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) for chemicals production (eg. methanol, other products) or Carbon Capture for Sequestration (CCS) in depleted oil fields or acquisition in the Region; and converting natural gas to bio-feedstock in our facilities as much as possible.

Hydrogen, an essential solution for the Energy Transition

The development of hydrogen energy is one of these possibilities. Over the past 50 years, Air Liquide has developed a unique know-how in the management of the entire hydrogen value chain (production, storage, distribution and development of new uses) and has acquired leading companies in this field of expertise.

The Group firmly believes that this molecule is a key lever in the drive to decarbonize industrial activities that are still dependent on fossil fuels. Its main advantages:

  • Generation of zero emissions during its use, if it is produced using renewable energy sources
  • Storage in liquid form (like our cryogenic air gases) for a long term and then be re-transformed into energy, thus compensating for the intermittent nature of these same energy sources.

Air Liquide Singapore's direction in energy transition

Air Liquide Singapore is confident that the mix of technical opportunities available within our Group; the constantly growing interest of Singapore to do even better than what has been declared until now; the pressure coming from international customers and market in moving to low carbon energy environment - will allow us to not only to meet our goals in carbon footprint reduction, but to build new business and services for our existing and new customers.
